Thebambiest was set up in 2001 in London by Imari Suganuma, an art director & choreographer from Japan. Learning modern dance since early childhood, her interest to contemporary dance grew. She took Theatre & Dance course in College of Art, Nihon University in Japan to learn dance production and direction. Her interest extended to dance video which makes it more accessible to people.
In order to study visual graphics, she moved to London and took BA Graphic course at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design.
The aim of our activity is to progress recognition and appreciation of contemporary dance by collaborating with other creators within art categories such as fashion and graphic designers. By using two different space theories, cinematic dance video and stage scene, under the same theme, Imari tries to explore new way of performance and to extend the possibility of dance video.
Instead of Me is a contemporary dance performance. The theme of the project is "Sense of Distance between Relationships".
There are many aspects in the sense of distance. When walking down a street, suddenly catch a quick scent of perfume you familiar with. When borrowing a CD from friends, smell of his/her cigarette come with it. You feel their life.
The performance tries to express the insignificant sense that brimming around ordinary life using video and stage from the point of design, art, dance and visual image.
For this event, we are kindly accepted to use a church as the stage for performances with sympathy of priest. Also, Mr. Jas Senmbi, a bag designer of "Jas M.B", sponsoring us by providing his bag collections. A dance performance as a main project, we are planning to have various events in each rooms of the church, respectively relating to the theme. This includes Japanese comedian Mr. Takayasu Komiya's (from Conte Aka-Shingou, Red Signal) performance in a lecture room. He will introduce us rakugo, a Japanese traditional comic storytelling. |
